Just a little note on the green & blue variation.
I submitted the green & blue colour scheme, because I thought black was too morbid & red white and blue was too close to the old flag.
It has some symbolism attached too - the land (green), sea (blue) and sky (the stars), with the fern doubling as a long white cloud along the coastline.

I agree that black is a morbid colour on a flag.

Flag Official Description

Red is a significant colour to the NZ Maori, and is featured in the present NZ flag. Red also represents the sacrifice made by all New Zealanders during wartime.

White a colour featuring in the present New Zealand flag, white represents Aotearoa - Land of the Long White Cloud, The official Maori name for New Zealand. The colour also represents peace.

Blue a prominent colour in the present New Zealand flag, represents the water that surrounds our island nation, over which all New Zealanders (or their ancestors) crossed to get to New Zealand.

A stylised Silver Fern, an emblem of NZ for over 100 years has been worn by many generations of New Zealanders, in one form or another, from sportspersons, military personnel, to fire-fighters - The silver fern is an organic element unique to our shores which is representative of the growth of our nation. The many points of the fern leaf represent the many different ethnicities which call New Zealand home.

The single silver fern leaf spreading upwards represents that we are New Zealanders - one people - growing onward into the future. The Southern Cross, a defining element in the present New Zealand Flag, represents our geographic location in the antipodes.

The Southern Cross is visible throughout the year in the southern night skies. It has been used as a navigational aid for centuries and it helped guide early settlers to our islands. Each star is also representative of the major island groups of NZ - North Island, South Island, Stewart Island, and the Chatham Islands.

I still want to see a version with all black, red stars and an alternative silver fern more like the one on the war graves or the old one cent coin - less like a white feather and more curled round. Possible?

I was going to detail the various color ideas, spelling out what each represents to me. But you know what... I just think the green, white and blue is pretty. The others are fine, no argument there. The green one just makes me feel happy when I look at it.

While great for sporting events, the all black Sliver fern is far too morbid to represent an entire country. The Black, White, Red and Blue and the Blue, Green, White seem awkward. Red, White and Black flag looks much better, but is far too close to seeming like an exclusively Maori flag.

The Red, White, and Blue Sliver Fern flag looks great. It captures symbolism and meaning for all of New Zealand. Qualities a national flag should have.

Changing the flag would not automatically pave the way to a republic, look at Canada. People have argued that changing our flag is not a priority. They seem to have forgotten that on our own national flag we are representing Ireland, Scotland and England. Just something to think about before New Zealand claims it has a legitimate national identity.

Black is not morbid it is a powerful color and to me shows strength. I like a strong flag and the black one above has everything Id want in a NZ flag. History identity and strength. If we were to change Id be proud to have the black, white red and blue option as our flag.
