What do you think? - Complicated?

"A flag must be easy for a child to draw, A Silver fern on our flag will be too complicated."

Complicated?

Flag change opposers sometimes use this excuse to dismiss the silver fern flag.

Try telling the people of Wales, Albania, Nepal, Brazil, Swaziland, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, French Polynesia, Portugal, Turkmenistan, Saudi Arabia, Saint-Pierre & Miquelon, Cambodia, Montenegro, Kiribati, Moldova,  Andorra, Brunei, Bhutan, Belize, Sri Lanka, Kenya.... that their flag is too complicated.

Besides, with the advent of digital printing, flags are easier than ever to produce, imagine being a seamstress making the Welsh flag back in 1959, or imagine sewing up the Brazilian flag back in 1889!

Besides we don't think the silver fern flag is anywhere near as complicated as the national flags shown below.

"It's complicated" is quite a moot point.

The French have got wind of NZ's flag change and magFlags Ltd have started selling our copyrighted design illegally on Amazon for the princely sum of €69.00 ($NZD 111.58) including postage.

We have asked them to cease selling these flags and remind everyone that our New Zealander owned and operated store sell high quality 3x6 ft genuine flags for a very reasonable NZD $64.90 including postage and packaging.

Thank you

'PM's FAVOURITE: John Key says he has softened on his preference for a silver fern on black flag, instead supporting this design by Kyle Lockwood.'

The Prime Minister had softened his preference for a silver fern on a black background, saying it was unlikely to be a popular option.

Key said he personally preferred the Kyle Lockwood design featured above, which included a silver fern, but did not have a black background.

Compliments for the silver fern flag

Brian's new flag aloft in the Auckland breeze
We received this message from a very happy flag owner

“Hello Kyle

Your silver fern flag with the red and blue background is a winner.   Within a couple of hours of running it up the pole yesterday, I had a call from a neighbour to admire it and ask if I'd designed it.  I said I wish I had, but that it was yours.

Today I had a visit from another neighbour to say what a neat flag it is.  In the letterbox was a note from a local business person to say it's a great flag, and I should send it to John Key.
Until I saw your design, I wasn't enthused about changing the flag, fearing that the sports-mad would prevail and push the black flag onto us.  It's OK as a sports brand but we are not a colourless, black-and-white nation.  To me, a black flag is associated mainly with piracy and a brand of fly spray - hardly inspirers of national pride.

Your red and blue silver fern flag, on the other hand, has the best of everything.  Its retention of the white-rimmed red stars of the Southern Cross on a deep blue ground makes it instantly recognisable as the New Zealand flag.  The fern leaf is a striking image, perhaps even more memorable than the maple leaf on the Canadian flag.  The red completes a vibrant emblem.  It also draws in one of the main colours of the Tino Rangatiratanga flag, thus acknowledging the importance of Tangata Whenua.  James Busby considered that one proposed designs for the 1834 United Tribes of New Zealand was unsuitable as it contained no red, 'a colour to which the New Zealanders are particularly partial, and which they are accustomed to consider as indicative of rank.'

As an enthusiastic supporter, I'd like it to get maximum exposure.  I think the more that people see it flying in its entirety, the more they'll like it.

While I was typing this, another email of support came in.

Thank you for coming up with a superb design.

All the best.

Brian”

Brian sent us a photo of his flag, and for Aucklanders he says his flag can also be viewed at:

Brian says, “It’s on the left heading toward Tamaki Drive”
