"A flag must be easy for a child to draw, A Silver fern on our flag will be too complicated." Flag change opposers sometimes use this excuse to dismiss the silver fern flag. "It's complicated" is quite a moot point.

'PM's FAVOURITE: John Key says he has softened on his preference for a silver fern on black flag, instead supporting this design by Kyle Lockwood.' The Prime Minister had softened his preference for a silver fern on a black background, saying it was unlikely to be a popular option. Key said he personally preferred the Kyle Lockwood design featured above, which included a silver fern, but did not have a black background.
Until I saw your design, I wasn't enthused about changing the flag, fearing that the sports-mad would prevail and push the black flag onto us. It's OK as a sports brand but we are not a colourless, black-and-white nation. To me, a black flag is associated mainly with piracy and a brand of fly spray - hardly inspirers of national pride. Your red and blue silver fern flag, on the other hand, has the best of everything. Its retention of the white-rimmed red stars of the Southern Cross on a deep blue ground makes it instantly recognisable as the New Zealand flag. The fern leaf is a striking image, perhaps even more memorable than the maple leaf on the Canadian flag. The red completes a vibrant emblem. It also draws in one of the main colours of the Tino Rangatiratanga flag, thus acknowledging the importance of Tangata Whenua. James Busby considered that one proposed designs for the 1834 United Tribes of New Zealand was unsuitable as it contained no red, 'a colour to which the New Zealanders are particularly partial, and which they are accustomed to consider as indicative of rank.' As an enthusiastic supporter, I'd like it to get maximum exposure. I think the more that people see it flying in its entirety, the more they'll like it. While I was typing this, another email of support came in. Thank you for coming up with a superb design. All the best.
